Cabaret 101 - Lesson 2: To Theme or Not to Theme

While not necessary for your cabaret set list, a unifying theme often makes the decision of which songs to include a bit easier. If you can’t decide on a single theme, your set could be composed of multiple “mini-themes.” The important thing is that you have something that ties all of the songs together. For example, you could create a set of your favorite songs – all of various themes and topics – but your “patter” (the talk that accompanies your vocal performance) can tie them together by explaining why each song is a favorite. Above all else, if the songs in your set list don’t share a common theme, make sure that your cabaret set is interesting (more on this in our next "Cabaret 101" lesson on choosing songs).

If you wish to craft a set based on a unifying theme, ask yourself the following:

What Do You Want Your Audience to Learn About You?

The art of cabaret is a personal form of expression. Thus, you should decide just how much you want to reveal to your audience. Just a peak? Then you might choose a theme centered on a favorite artist and explain your individual connection to his/her songs. If you choose to more autobiographical, be careful not to divulge too much and turn your life into a musical soap opera.

How Will You Structure Your Theme-Based Set?

While a theme can provide a base on which to build your set, it may not be enough. You still need to consider how to structure your set . As with any good piece of entertainment, your set should have a beginning, middle and an end.

How Will You Use Patter to Tie Your Songs Together?

Given your theme, your choice of songs may not be immediately obvious to your audience. Song titles and lyrics alone often don’t seem to fit a chosen theme. What you choose to say in between songs can help your audience make the connection between each one.

How Will You Mix Variety into Your Set Based on a Common Theme?

Songs in your set that share a common theme don't all need to sound alike. In fact, you should choose songs that are quite different sounding. Opt for songs of varying tempo, style, and genre to keep your set interesting.
